Types of String Instruments


When you’re deciding on which string instrument you’d like to try it’s important to understand how they are broken down. All string instruments form part of the Orchestral Instruments and can be broken down into three main groups and they are:

Lutes – any string instruments that is plucked and contains a neck that is fretted or unfretted. Members of this group include instruments such as Cellos, Violins, Guitars etc.

Harps – any string instruments that have their strings contained within a frame fall into this category and these include Harps.

Zithers – any instruments that have their strings mounted on a body fall into this category including Cimbalom and Guqins.
